2014 Craggy Range Le Sol
$199.00
Nestled under Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay, Craggy Range is widely regarded as this regions finest producer. Established in 1998, premium sites were selected to express each vineyards unique attributes through the wines derived from them.
Their flagship Syrah Le Sol is grown in the esteemed Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District. This unique sub-region lies on the former bed of the Ngaruroro River in Hawke’s Bay, exposed by floods in 1876. The gravels contain a combination of warm river stones and sandy alluvial soils that both insulate the vines in winter and retain extra heat during summer. Le Sol ('the soil'), is New Zealand's most iconic Syrah.
Born of a Hermitage clone brought to New Zealand in the 1840’s, Craggy Ranges flagship Syrah expresses tremendously fragrant notes of violets and black pepper with hints of cigar box and aniseed rounding out some depth on the nose.
Ripe plum and peppercorn spice flavours are most evident before the youthful tannins coat the palate. As the tannins loosen their grip, the flavours reveal savoury notes with earthy spice and leather.
Excellent length provided via a hearty structure.
Last tasted June 2018. Still 6-12 years from its best.
