Bendigo pioneer and Central Otago legend Rudi Bauer proudly shows off his Quartz Reef vineyard. The great man, born and raised in Austria, planted these vines in 1998 on New Zealand's largest quartz deposit among the rocky outcrops of schist and elevated slopes at Bendigo Station. These vines were the first planted in the sub-region and were granted Demeter Biodynamic Certification in 2011. The vineyard lies on a north facing slope upon fine Waenga sandy loam at an elevation of 217 – 264 metres. Rudi's wines (which include one of the countries best Methode Traditionnelle's) are held in extremely high regard on the international market and he's widely admired and respected amongst his local winemaking peers.⠀
