Ok wine nerds, time to get your geek on!!🤓 It was indeed my pleasure once more to host another 'mind blowing' wine tasting experience at The Hills Clubhouse in Arrowtown. On this occasion, Old World vs New World Pinot Noir!! Myself and a most selective panel of astute wine connoisseurs🍷🥋were treated to some of the finest wines ever produced.

The 2009 Leroy Nuits St. Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru was by far the standout above all the Grand Cru's from both flights and the finest expression of Pinot Noir I've tried to date. The first taste is almost incomprehensible, as if your senses are somewhat ambushed by the level of attention this wine instantly commands from them. For me, the bouquet is complex and seductive with perfumed notes of violets and dried rose petal with freshly shaved black truffle and soft smokey French Oak. The palate is mesmerising with rich flavours of ripe cherry,🍒 stewed strawberries 🍓and butter sautéed mushrooms. Sound structure and still juicy acidity supports an intriguing minerality that seems to bind everything together, cumulating in the most seamless and euphoric finish imaginable 🎻. At many thousands of dollars a bottle, it's unlikely I'll be trying the Leroy (pronounced Le-wah) again any time soon!! 😪 ⠀
However the much more affordable 2012 Felton Road Block 3 Pinot Noir was the second most preferred wine of the night, which considering the company is an extraordinary result for Central Otago wine.. It's floral bouquet and earthy undertones lead most of the panel to Burgundy. I also found this wine quite French in its mouthfeel and structure. Both feminine yet assertive acidity help bring its flavour profile to life with red forrest berry obvious up front followed by gamey, slow cooked terrine flavours that linger generously. It's wines like this that continue to bridge the gap between the Old World and the New..
